It’s coyote breeding season; protect your pets

It’s breeding season for coyotes and residents are urged to keep a close watch on pets. Coyotes seek mates and breed from January through March making them more prominent and aggressive. Pet owners are encouraged to exercise caution when walking their pets or letting them out in the yard. Small dogs and cats can be an attractive food source for coyotes and other wildlife. Always supervise your pet outside and keep your dog on a short leash while walking. Do not allow pets to roam, especially at night. When coming in contact with a coyote: • Do not run away from or turn your back on a coyote; • Shout ‘go away’ in a loud and authoritative voice at the coyote; • Wave your arms, clap your hands and throw objects in the direction of the coyote to encourage it to move away from you; • Be as big and loud as possible using hazing tools such as whistles, horns, rocks, water guns filled with vinegar, etc.; • Pick up any small pets or children that are with you; • If the coyote does not leave the area, back away slowly while still facing the coyote. Coyotes and other wildlife fall under jurisdiction of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. For additional information on keep your pets safe from coyotes, visit the Division of Wildlife's website.
